Snuggled in the heart of India, the royal city of Gwalior is much known for its impressive fort, opulent palaces, enduring culture, and flamboyant royals. A power center for many dynasties for centuries, Gwalior was the seat of Scindias for almost 200 years and later the political arena of the members of the erstwhile Scindia royal family. The city boasts of an unparalleled reputation in classical Indian music with legendary singers like Tansen & Baiju Bawara originating from Gwalior.

Described as a ‘pearl amongst fortresses in India’ by Emperor Babur, this hill-top fort paints an imposing picture. This massive fort, sprawled along the length of a 3 km long plateau, towers upon the city as an imperial guardian of Gwalior. Built over centuries, the fort bears influences of various dynasties who ruled here. From Rajput styled palaces to Dravidian temples, and Jain sculptures- the architecture & sculptures at the fort are quite fascinating.
Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century, this magnificent palace is known for its brilliant blue ceramic tiles engraved in the façade.
A dazzling creation in white, this palace built by Maharaja Jayajirao in 1774, is an elegant blend of several European architectural styles. The interiors of its massive Durbar Hall are flush in gold & glitter, boasting of two magnificent chandeliers, and one of the world’s largest carpets. A silver train serving cigars & brandy around the dining table, solid crystal furniture, and a crystal staircase are some of the highlights of the palace. Its 35 rooms have been converted to a museum that showcases manuscripts, vintage cars & silver buggies, and rare paintings.
Built by Raja Man Singh for his beloved queen Mrignayani, this beautiful palace has decayed over time. The palace is home to the State Archeological Museum that showcases various artifacts including precious stones, jewels, terracotta objects, sculptures, paintings, and inscriptions.
These twin temples, locally known as Saas Bahu temples, are dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and are much famed for their grand architecture & exquisite engraving.
Chanderi & Maheshwari saris & fabric, handcrafted carpets, dolls, ornaments, and other knick-knacks make great souvenirs from Gwalior.
Gwalior is known for its delicious street food ranging from paneer jalebis to kachoris, and delicious Poha, and Sabutdana Khichdi.
The best time to visit Gwalior would be in winter from October to March.

By Rail- Gwalior Railway Station is serviced by a network of direct and express trains that connect the city to the rest of the country.
