A Rendezvous with the Roaring Bengal Tigers
Dense forests, haunted ruins, and the allure of spotting the Royal Bengal Tiger are sure to bring you to Ranthambore- the haunt of the majestic striped beast. This erstwhile hunting ground of the Rajput kings is now a haven for the tigers, and a favorite haunt of adventure lovers, and wildlife photographers.
One of the best wildlife parks in India, Ranthambore often holds a special place on the much-famed Golden Triangle circuit of India and is also a renowned destination on luxury trains like the Palace on Wheels, and the Maharaja’s Express.
Spread in an area of around 392km2, Ranthambore is positioned at the intersection of Aravalli & Vindhya Hill ranges with Chambal & Banas Rivers flowing through the park. Undulated topography, sprawling grassy fields, large lakes, and dense jungle of dry deciduous trees cover the entire park.
Ranthambore’s dense jungles are an ideal habitat for many predators. Though the Royal Bengal Tigers are the main allure of Ranthambore, the forests are also home to other mammals like the leopard, jungle cat, fishing cat, sloth bear, jackal, striped hyena, antelopes, nilgai, desert fox, and python. Be wary of the lake banks that are often dotted with crocodiles soaking in the sun.
The many lakes in the park attract thousands of birds. Around 272 species of birds have been documented in Ranthambore. Some of the winged creatures found here include serpent eagle, vulture, waterfowl, large cormorant, sarus crane, painted spurfowl, sandpiper, bronzed winged jacana, kingfisher, painted sand grouse, nightjar, and the great horned owl.
Safari in Ranthambore is an exhilarating experience. Jeep Safaris and Canter safaris in Ranthambore are the best way to spot the elusive stripes. The park has been divided into ten safari zones for a perfect safari experience. The Bakula region, with its dense forests and small watering holes, is a scenic location and is much favored by tigresses and their cubs.
The park derives its name from the Ranthambore Fort located strategically amidst dense forest cover. The fort, now in ruins, is home to many palaces, temples, and heritage structures.
Ranthambore National Park is opened to visitors from October to June. It is closed during the monsoon months of July, August and September.
By Air- Sanganer Airport, Jaipur, around 150kms away, is the closest airport.
By Rail- The nearest railhead, Sawai Madhopur, around 14kms from Ranthambore, is connected with major cities in the country.
By Road- Ranthambore is well-connected with major Indian cities by a network of well-maintained roads & highways.
