Face to Face with the Tigers of Kumaon
The region infamous for the man-eaters of Kumaon in the early 20th century was later converted to a haven for the Royal Bengal Tigers that roamed the foothills of Shivaliks. The first national park in India and the origin of Project Tiger in the country, Jim Corbett National Park is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.
The park, located in Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, was set up in 1936 and was later dedicated to Jim Corbett, a renowned hunter–turned- conservationist. Book your wildlife tour package and come along for an adventure to the jungles of Kumaon.
The national park spans around 520km2 with an undulating topography ranging from tall hills to grasslands, lakes, and marshes. The two rivers, Ramganga and Kosi, flow through the park, with their tributaries creating a network of water bodies in the sanctuary. Over 110 species of trees grow here, thus creating a canopy of thick forests at Jim Corbett National park.
Jim Corbett National Park is the undisputed territory of the royal Bengal tiger. However, the park is home to more wildlife, including leopards, elephants, jungle cat, fishing cat, barking deer, sambar deer, hog deer, chital, sloth, and Himalayan black bears. Look carefully, and you may spot the exotic yellow-throated martens, Himalayan gorals, langurs, and rhesus macaques in the forest. Watch out for wild elephants frolicking in the waters of Ramganga, and check out the crocodiles & gharials that are bred here and then released in the river.
Jim Corbett is not only famous for its tigers & elephants but is also a birder’s paradise. Over 650 species of birds, both migrant & resident, grace the park. Climb up a watchtower, and you may spot jungle fowl, partridge, pheasant, dove, woodpecker, teal, cormorant, and stork. So do pack your binoculars when you hit the trail in Jim Corbett National park.
Jim Corbett National Park promises you an ultimate safari experience. Divided into various zones, the park offers you both Jeep Safari and Canter Safari. Stay in the forest guest house inside the park and board a jeep or canter for a thrilling tiger safari.
